About Gran Cenote

Gran Cenote is one of the most beloved cenotes in all of Mexico — and one of the most accessible. Located just 5 kilometers west of Tulum town along the road to Cobá, it's easily reachable by bicycle, scooter, or taxi, making it the go-to cenote for travelers based in Tulum.

The cenote is semi-open, meaning it has both an open-air section and a partially enclosed cave section that you can snorkel or swim through. A stunning natural limestone arch spans the open section, and the cave walls are studded with stalactites that formed over thousands of years. The water is extraordinarily clear — visibility regularly exceeds 30 meters — and a brilliant turquoise-blue color that photographs unlike anything else.

Gran Cenote is also famous for its resident freshwater turtles, which can frequently be spotted swimming alongside visitors. The combination of turtles, crystal water, cave formations, and the photogenic arch makes it one of the most photographed natural sites in the entire Yucatan Peninsula.

Snorkeling & Swimming

Snorkeling at Gran Cenote is an exceptional experience even for beginners. The shallow sections near the entrance are perfect for those new to snorkeling, while the cave passages offer more adventurous exploration. Life jackets are mandatory and provided free of charge.

The cave section can be explored by snorkelers — no scuba certification required. You'll swim through narrow passages lit by shafts of light filtering through cracks in the ceiling, past stalactites and stalagmites, with the possibility of spotting turtles resting on underwater ledges.

Gran Cenote is also a certified cave diving site. Experienced divers with proper cave diving certification can explore the deeper sections of the cave system, which connects to the vast Sac Actun underwater cave network.

💡 Turtle sightings: Turtles are most active in the morning. They tend to rest on underwater rocks near the cave entrance — move slowly and don't approach them directly for the best chance of a close encounter.

How to Get There

Gran Cenote is one of the easiest cenotes to reach without a car or tour.

💡 Bike it: The bicycle ride from Tulum along the jungle road is genuinely beautiful and part of the experience. Many visitors say the ride itself is a highlight of their Tulum trip.
